Sleeping in bed

Many of our friends have always advised us to make sure the bub does NOT sleep with the parents in their bed. The main reason is because once they get used to it, they will forever need to sleep with the folks until they are at least 5 years old or more and this means getting a good night's sleep for the parents will be only a dream...

So we've always kept this in mind. However, there are the occasional times when the little one starts squealing at around 6am in the morning and being so exhausted from the graveyard feedings, we have no choice but to bring him to our bed rather than rocking him to sleep on the rocking chair in his room.

And many times as soon as we put him in our bed, our clever little bub falls straight to sleep. When he is in our bed, both Mr M & I find sleeping a very hard task for the fear we may accidentally squash him since we are sooooo tired. So we usually go into a light sleep.

I know too that our bub is very much manipulating his parents. There was one time I saw him smiling right after I placed him on our bed as if he was pretending to fall asleep. But little does he know that about 15minutes into his sleep (when he reaches his deep sleep), I secretly place him back to his cot & he wakes up feeling all so disappointed hours later! WAHAHAHA!

Daddy dreams: "hmmm I wonder what I will be having for breakkie when I wake up?"
Baby dreams: "hmmm I wonder when I will be getting my feed next? And oh this bed is soooo nice & comfy.. very spacious!"
Mummy says: "mmmMMM.. Now that baby has taken my spot, where on earth am I going to sleep?"

Aww.... he looks very cuteeeee. and putting him next to Kelv, man... are they photocopy of each other or what? hehehe.

ya, a lot of my friends whose kids are now in prep or grade 1 and still sleeping with them because of that.

so yeah... for me, i'm too lazy to deal with the room/bed separation later on, so i just separated her right from birth. she slept in her own room since birth (or i should say since coming back from the hospital that is). put an extra mattress in Zach's room. so if you're too tired from your graveyard feedings, you can just collapse there (in his room) so that he knows that that IS his room. so instead of moving him (makes him think that he's got that option available to him), you move you instead. because at the end of the day, it's easier to move you out of his room than moving him out of your room. and by you moving in (instead of him moving out), as far as Zach is concerned, there's no change, he's always in HIS room and that's what it'll always be.

it'll make it easier for you too to move him from cot to bed later on. but of course, when he's sleeping in bed (instead of cot), he would be able to walk out the bed himself and he can(if he wants to) still walk to your room. but it won't be as difficult as training those bubs who are so used to sleep in the same room as parents to sleep on their own.

hope this helps. but again, it's up to you cos my friends, they don't mind going through the difficult stage later on to separate the kids and they'd prefer the bubs to sleep with them when they were younger. so it's just the matter of your preference, really...

also have to consider when you're planning to have a 2nd one, cos if your 2nd one comes out during the time when you are training your 1stborn to sleep on his own, it'll be a bit difficult, cos it'll then create the whole jealousy thing, why my sibling is allowed to sleep with you guys and not me and to reason with them is not as easy as to reason with adults. they wouldn't care if their siblings are still a small bubba. they would just think, i also still want to sleep with you guys. why now put me out of the room and let the small guy sleep with you.
